In Time (2011, Andrew Niccol)

TIME IS MONEY

In the near future, people don’t age past 25 and from the 25th birthday, the clock starts ticking. TIME is the only currency: we earn and spend time. Will Salas, 28, is wrongly accused of killing a man and stealing a century from him. In order to survive, he kidnapped the daughter of a very rich man.

Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake

The plot comes from the simple « time is money » idea and when money is converted into time, the result is somewhat scary. We are trapped in a system where everyone (like the timekeeper) blindly follows the rule, ignores what is right and minds his own business; a system where it is impossible to get out. That is the most important element to be remembered. The idea of converting money is smart but there are too much actions. As for the attempts to « set things right » like the bank robberies, one wonders whether there is a smarter solution because soon when we will be running out of time, it will be the end. What about time travel?

Memorable quotes

Will: You’re from here, aren’t you?

Timekeeper Leon: Long time ago… and I walked out, I escaped

Will: And now you make sure none of us does

Timekeeper Leon: It’s the way it has to be. I don’t set the clock, I can’t turn it back, I keep it running
