The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014, Wes Anderson)

Zubrowka: a little girl holds a book titled the Grand Budapest Hotel. The writer (Tom Wilkinson) recalls the moment when he first met the owner, Zero Moustapha (F. Murray Abraham). During a diner, M. Moustapha tells the writer, then a young man (Jude law), the story of the famous resort.

Behold the Grand Budapest Hotel, a lively resort surrounded by snowed mountains in the middle of nowhere. The staff are busy with the tasks appointed to each of them by the boss, M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes). Gustave H, a man with an excellent reputation, enjoys taking care of his guests especially rich, vain, superficial, insecure (and blond) widows. When one of his best client from Schloss Lutz, Madame D (Tilda Swinton) dies, she bequeathes the "boy with apple" painting to Gustave provoking the rage of her son Dmitri Desgoffe and Taxi (Adrien Brody) as well as his right hand man Joplin (Willem Dafoe). A series of unfortunate events occur: murders, investigations, theft, manhunt, etc.

Ralph Fiennes, F. MurrayAbraham, Mathieu Amalric, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Coldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Léa Seydoux, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson, Owen Wilson, Toni Revolori

Wes Anderson plunges us into the marvellous adventures of the tennant, M. Gustave and his lobby boy and future successor Zero Moustapha in the interwar period. While the story itself at some point has nothing special, the real deal lies in the quality of the narrative. From Tom Wilkinson to Toni Revolori, the delivery of the script just flows. The visuals are spectacular especially the design of the hotel. As for the cast, if almost all of them are familiar faces, Toni Revolori is the big revelation in the film. And of course, Ralph Fiennes is captivating with his sensibility and his poetries.

So my advice: don't miss it

  1. Fans of director Wes Anderson, here's what you've been waiting for since you saw 'Moonrise Kingdom.' 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is another comedy with quirky characters and oddball encounters.
